About This Site

It's safe to say that nearly everybody has heard music in one form or another at some point in their lives. Nearly everybody, even if thye don't consciously enjoy it, has the ability to recognize some form of music.

In 1977 smash-hit "Sir Duke", Stevie Wonder calls music "a language we all understand." Music is indeed like language in many ways. Humans produce it. It's audible. It expresses ideas and emotions. It varies by region. Over decades, linguists studying language have identified certain aspects common to all languages (e.g. phonetics, syntax, semantics). More recently, scientists within the subfield of computational linguistics have used AI to calculate such aspects of language.

Our goal here is to apply those same AI techniques to determine the commonalities among all sound that can be considered "music" and, in doing, so define music.
